"The Canterville Ghost" Diary

Diary of the classes looking for the world in this book

June 2005: The Canterville Ghost's Website is online.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May 2005: Last messages on the teachers' forum concerning the last step of the project. Unfortunately the Chinese students haven't taken part in the last part of the collaboration, but their comments and ideas posted on the forum have been useful as well to build the texts of the final Website.

The end of the year

Hi Daniela,
My students are working on the different working areas. Most of them have already sent at least one document. Thanks to your students for their work that we read with much interest! The only thing is that the end of the school year is very close: the lessons will stop on May 30th. I only have 2 classes left with my students. I'll make sure they are done with their work; the only thing is I'm not sure we will have enough time to work with you on the final adjustements.Thqt's too bad: the end of the school year came unexpectedly quickly for us this year on account of the students' strikes in April and March. Tell me what you think about that. I don't want to let you down with all this work!
See you,
Nathalie
The end of the year

Hi Nathalie!!! Don't worry, the important thing is the your students send their works and, as our school year finishes on the 10th of June, we can assemble the works of the small groups in one page, if they do not have time to do it personally with their partners. I think we can be satisfied of our collaboration that is coming to a conclusion even if we have had some unexpected stops, but this is normal in every project. When the website is ready (end of May - first week of June I think)I'll link it to the home page of the World in a Book and you'll see that we'll re-use all the materials my students and your students have produced (texts and drawings)both in Italy and in France. Of course you can suggest everything you want to change or improve, and send me everythibg you want: we can work on it for some more weeks to optimize the final website. I'll be at school up to the 14th July for the exams of my final class (5th grade). Ok?

Love

Daniela

Hi!
Thank you once more for your kindness! I really didn't expect the end of the year to arrive so soon! You can contact me in June, I'll be away for some oral exams but will be able to access my mailbox from there, so don't hesitate if you need some help. I also wanted to tell you I really enjoyed this experience; it was real great working with you and your students. I found it very interesting and motivating for my students to deal with literature in a new way. Communicating with their partners via the Internet was also something they really liked. If I have the same classes next year, I am ready to do it again, but perhaps only starting in January on a shorter piece of work (poems, songs,...Well I don't know yet!). I would also like to use the European framework as we had planned this year but didn't have time to. (We can't do everything!!!)
Keep in touch!and if you ever come to
France it could be fun to meet
Nathalie

April 2005: Holidays and....work as it can be seen in the French teacher' s messages:

hello!

Hi there!
We are on holiday at the moment. see you on April 24th!
Bye!
Nathalie

Easter Holidays

Hi!!! We're on holiday, too. See you in a few days. Daniela

Hi!
We are in the computer room working on the project. The work on the chapters is nearly finished. As soon as I have corrected it, my students will be able to send it to your students. I think they should be able to do this by next Monday.
See you,
Nathalie

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

March 2005: The working groups are formed by the Italian and French students. Here some some messages exchanged by the teachers to arrange the collaborative group work

Hi Miao, Hi Nathalie

Hi !!!! How are you??? What do you think of the proposal (Based on Nathalie's ideas)concerning the formation of the groups? Please let me know as soon as possible when your students can start working. If we want to produce a good website with our work for the end of the year we have to start working soon! My students are choosing their favourite theme (one Italian students for each group) and on Monday I'll send a new message on the forum with the groups + the name and email addresse of the student next to each group . According to the number of students you have you can do the same or, if they are more , 2 students from a class for each group is wonderful as well. In the end we will have groups of 3-4 people. I'll be at school this week on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday, not on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (school trip). I think we can complete the operation of forming groups within the end of the week.

Let me know as soon as possible

Daniela
Hi!
Sorry for not answering sooner but we are quite busy at the moment at school! I'm seeing my students tomorrow and we will make the groups. As soon as my groups are completed, that is Wednesday at the latest, I'll send the list!
See you,
Nathalie

Deadlines's proposal for the last part of the project

Hi!! I think the final deadline within which the collaborative works must be finished in their definitive form can be 20th May (more or less). Next Saturday (1st April) I'll see my students at the lab and they will write their first messages to their personal partners (French and Chinese) so the groups can find an agreement on the work they have to do; Please Miao send us a message with the groups updated with the Chinese names as soon as possible!!! In Europe we'll have our Easter Holidays in April (from 13th to 19th in Italy, from 7th to 24th in France). The deadline for the first exchange of the works produced by each country could be the end of April, that is some days after the European students come back to school after Easter holidays, so they can use also their holidays to work a bit! Then the groups will have 3 weeks of May up to the 20th-21st to exchange proposals and drafts of their merged works until they agree on the definitive form. OK? Please Miao tell me if your schol schedule will alloy you to follow this polan or not. We can change it!!!!In the last 10 days of May I, my colleaugue Ernesta and the students' group that help us with the website will assemble all the materials in the website of The Canterville Ghost. It will be great!!!!!. Let me know what you think about this plan as soon as possible !!!!!!

As to group 19 (no French partners and no Italian Prtners for the moment) do you think we can assign it to some students who would like to work a bit more, let's say one French, one Italian and one Chinese I'll try to find one next time I'll see my students.....

Bye Daniela

February 2005: The students are completing their reading and preparing the list of topics to develop in the last steps of the project.

Here are the messages posted on the forum by the teachers:

... I'll try to make a list (a first one, of course to be changed and modified as you like) of the themes to develop in pairs in the second part of the work + the seven chapters. If you have time send me a list of your students (names and email addresses), I'll ask the same list to Miao (she must have come back to school after winter holidays now). I'll publish all the lists of students and the list of themes on the forum so we can easily form the pairs according to the students' preferences. OK? I have not worked much for our group in these last week, I am sorry but you can't imagine how much I've had to do for all the tandems and groups of the project. I'll try to do more in these weeks so everything will be ready when you come back to school.....

See you soon

Daniela
Hi Miao,

are you back at school? Please send a message on the forum and tell us something about your winter holidays. What about the new year? The year of the dog, isn't it? Will it be a good year for us all, I think we all need a better one. When you have time, please, send me a list of your students (names and email addresses), you can directly post it on the forum. Please send also a list of the possible themes the students can develop together in pairs in the second part of the collaborative work. Of course in a few days I'll do the same (both students' and themes' lists) so in the end the students can choose the topic they want to develop together with a foreign partner and the pairs can be formed.

See you soon

Daniela
back to school...!

hi to the 2 of you!
We are back to school today and have finished reading the book!!! Our messages concerning the last 4 chapters will be posted on the forum at the beginning of next week. I've started working on a list of themes to be developed together. As soon as I'm done, I'll send it to you as well as the names and email addresses of my students(and our photos...sorry about that!). My students haven't seen the photos and drawings from Italy yet...but I'm sure they'll be excited when I tell them that there are new elements on the forum tomorrow.

See you soon,
Nathalie
Hi Nathalie, hi Miao!!!!

Welcome back to school! We have finished reading the book and the students are sending their messages on the last chapters.I'll post the list of students/email adresses and themes in a few days. See you soon Daniela
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

December – January 2005: In the end of November, most students have completed reading the book. In the forum 7 discussion areas have been created, each for every chapter of the book. During the period from the first part of December to the half of January, the students have exchanged comments and personal opinions about ‘The Canterville Ghost’. The most discussed chapters are one and two, and some messages are in chapter three discussion area. Of course new messages from Chinese, Italian and French students will be sent in these areas.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

November 2005: in the ‘Forum Café’ the students have written many messages to present themselves, and know their partners in this project.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

October 2005:  After useful exchanges between the three teachers (Daniela Ianni, Nathalie Faure,Sun Miao) the first conclusion is the deadline to complete the reading of the book:
- January-February for the Chinese partners;

- December- first day of January for the French partners;

- Jenuary for the Italian partners.

So the step of the reading will end, for everyone, in the end of January.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
September 2005: The students of the class IV A Liceo Scientifico Tecnologico, ITIS "S. Cannizzaro" of Colleferro (Rome) and the students of a class of Lycee Condorcet of Cedex (Bordeaux) ,France have formed their reading tandem: they will work on the book The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde.
