Summary: John
the savage goes to the Park Lane Hospital, a
sixty storey tower,
for the Dying to see his mother Linda.First he encounters the head
nurse who is astonished that someone would want to see the dying. John
finds his mother in a room with television and in a pleasent atmosphere
and while he is there, a group of identical mails
twins come
into the room for their death conditioning. They have fun in the room and
will lose their fear of dying because of the fun. The
boys make fun of Linda’s ugliness and fatness. John gets angrily, but
the nurse warns him to behave. When
Linda returns to a state of semi-consciouness she asks for Pope. Up to
that John had been remembering the positive memories with Linda in the
indian village. Her mention of Pope, though, convert his momories to bad
ones.He starts to shake her in effort to get her to recognize him. Suddenly
Linda recognizes John, but before she can speak she fails to breathe
anymore. John
realizes that he shooks her too hard and he runs to get the head nurse. When
they come back to Linda’s bed she is dead. Then
the group comes again to see the dead woman.
Themes/Topics: The
chapter details the surrounding of Linda’s death. It
is about how the people in Brave new world deal with death and dying and
how John deals with his love.
Most
important characters of the chapter: John
the savage, Linda, head nurse and group of boys. John:
is the only character who feels like we do. When he sees his mother in the
bed, he feels sad and lonely. The only person who has ment something to
him has left the world and now he is alone in Brave new world. Linda:
is full of drugs in this chapter and at the end she dies. Nurse
and the group of boys: They are the typical people of BNW and they show us
how they feel. They are conditioned to have no fear towards dying and they
can’t to anything against this...
Relevant
quotations: “’Isn’t
she awful? Came the wgispered comments. Look at her teeth!’“ (page
166)à shows what the boys think about old people “’But
I’m John! He shouted.I’m John!’ And in his furious misery he
actually caught her by the shoulder and shook her.“ (page 168) „The
Savage stood for a moment in frozen silence, then fell in his knees beside
the bed and, convering his face with hands, sobbed uncontrollably.“ (page
169) à shows John’s feelings. “Can’t
you behave??“ Nurse
says: “Can’t you behave?“,because in this expression it is evident
the passivity with which is consideres the death... Observations about
the style
The
style is very simple. The author exalts the death’s theme. A pleasent
and painless death.
Function
of the chapter: This
chapter shall show us what people in Brave new world think about death.
The chapter represents in the story of the book a disagreeable event:
Linda’s death. The
reader is interested in the differences between Brave New World and “our
world“. Espescially death is a topic peole are interested in since they
exist, because death is a phanomen we
can not understand. People are afraid of death and dying, because you do
not know what happens after life. This
chapter shows us what conditioning really can do. You can see that
“Brave New World“ does everything to make people happy. All “bad“
things are forbidden or with the help of conditioning kept away.
Short
comment: I
think this chapter is very important,. First we can see how the society
deals with the problem of death and the other important aspect is that
the Savage is now alone. It
is stange to us that people are not afraid of dying. The boys make fun of
Linda and the death but in our society this would ot be able. They
“recycle“ dead people and I think this is unbelieable. Respect is very
important also for dead people. The
Savage is now alone in the “strange“ society, because he no one else
who things exactly like him.He has lost the person who who ment a lot to
him. It is hard to lose such a person and I think especially in a world
like „Brave New World“.Leonie For
me this new conception of death is correct. Each
patient that is in Hospital has television and the air is perfumed. The
patients breathes a new air; a deprived air of fears. The
environment is happy and clean. This is a NEW WORLD……… BY Leonardo
