Chapter 9
Describes how Bernard arrange their trip back to London. he
flies to Santa Fé by helicopter and offers Mustapha Mond a "matter
of sufficient scientific interest". he wants to bring John and his
mother back to London, so Mustapha Mond agrees to Bernard's plan. In the
same time John gets in panic, because he thinks that they are already
gone, but he finds Lenina lying on a bed on a soma trip and so
everything is fine again. *He admires the beauty
of Lenina . When he hears the noise of the helicopter, he runs outside
the rest house for receiving Bernard.
Themes/topics:
1.Bernards arrangement with Mustapha Mond
2.*The theme of the hidden love, when the author
describes the moment when John
admires Lenina in the rest house.
Characters:
1.Bernard: in this chapter Bernard shows his intelligence by having a
quite interesting plan: he wants to bring 2 savages back to "civilization",
so that he can stay in London and don't have to move to Iceland. he is
also a very convincing person, because he has no problem to offer
Mustapha Mond his plan. his behaviour is very cool while he is in the
hotel room.
2.John: he is a very emotional person, what is shown while he is crying
and while he is next to Lenina. and it also seems that he is already a
kind of addictive to Bernard, because he thinks it is "the most
terrible thing that ever happened to him" after thinking they were
gone and at the end of the chapter he is running to Bernard.
*OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE STYLE:
The author uses verbs and sentences that raise up the feelings of
suspense and fear. Like in the moments when John is in the rest house,
when he deals with Lenina in coma. But also there is a lot of
romanticism when John dedicates the verse to Lenina.
Some
relevant quotations:
they are already integrated in the other parts.
*The verse of Romeo and Juliet and of Troilus and Cressida:
“Her eyes, her hair, her cheek, her gait, her voice……”
Function
of the chapter:
it is a very important chapter fot brave new world, because it describes
bernard's decision to take the savages back to london and johns feelings
towards lenina. it is the beginning of bernard's "new life"
being accepted in his environment and of course of a "new
life" for john.
Comment:
I think this chapter gives us some information about how the book goes
on, e.g. John's behaviour towards Lenina and Bernard's decision to take
them back to the civilized word.
*It is very exalting the use of this classic
verses for describing these emotions! So we can see that in this utopian
world people must use sentence of the ancient world for expressing love
feelings. I think that this topic is very important.
