CHARACTERS IN BNW

by diego panetti

BERNARD MARX:

Bernard Marx is an Alfa plus and so he is one of the most important worker in the Hatcheries And Conditioning Centre. Bernard is a strange character because he had a sort of surplus intelligence and so he is the most rational too. He is more taller than the other Alfas-plus and he has a slim physical, all the people think in an error made in his surrogate when he was a child (they believe that the nursery put a surplus dose of alcohol in his surrogate). He hasn’t a great feeling whit the society in which he lives, in fact some times he doesn’t respect the moral laws of the society and his grate intelligence put it out of the regular psychological scheme. He know all the conditioning in which he is involved but he try to live like an independent individual. All that things are demonstrated in his reflections, in his human relationship and in his life’ aspects. He refused soma and he wants to live always only using his human forces. For this reason the controller of the centre wants to isolate it in an island out of the new world. His ideas are dangerous for the society in which he live, and for Mustapha Mond  (one of the controller) he is a great individual and for give it the freedom he hadn’t  in the past when he was a young man, send it in an island.

LENINA:

Lenina is the most beautiful girl in the Centre she is an Alfas. She works in the conditioning centre and she has to inoculate some virus to the bottled children to immunize they versus tropical diseases. This character is integrate in the society in which she lives so she respect all the moral laws, she takes soma every time she need it, she has a lot of men she uses all the technological instruments for body beauty…. Lenina represent in this book a badge for the BNW’ society. She likes Bernard Marx and travelled whit him in the reservation of the savages in Mexico, but after that when she sees the Savage she falls in love for him, but love didn’t exist in the New World and in fact she likes Savage only for sex (she is always  regular whit the law one girl for more men).

THE SAVAGE:

He is a special character because he is the soon of two Alfas, but he lived whit his mother whit the savages of Mexico. His father is one of the directors of the centre in the NW but he didn’t lives whit him. He is a friend of Bernard that met him during the travel in Mexico whit Lenina. The Savage didn’t live in the NW and so when he arrived in the city all the people wanted to watch this strange man, he has a viviparous mother and so a father, he is beautiful but for the people only a bad man. This character is out of the world in every point of view, in fact he is a romantic person he love Shakespeare and ha has a rigid moral in opposition to the moral of the New World. In the book he represents our world and the humans value, so he doesn’t accepts the society and try to go out of the civilization for founding the freedom he hasn’t in the NW. He refuses Lenina because for him she is only an immoral prostitute of the men, and dropping the NW come to live in solitude in a lighthouse on the hill near London. He killed it selves but actually was the curiosity of the people that killed him.

MUSTAPHA MOND:

He is one of the ten Controller of the Hatcheries and Conditioning Centres of the world. He is a very interesting character because he represent the perfect person of the NW and at the same time he is very strange and friendly like Controller, in fact he proposes to Bernard to go in the island for permitting him to express his personality. He knows the  history of the old world and in his world he is the one that know them, he has the power to manage all the social activities of the NW but he knows also the limits of this society in which all the humans freedom are suppressed by the conditioning techniques. He like freedom so decides to give them to Bernard and its friends he gives they the one he hadn’t when he was young.

HENRY FOSTER:

He represents a very integrate person in the society of the New World and sometimes he seems a sort of robot a slimy robot that makes all the assignments he receives from the heads of the centre. He ménages some activities in the hatcheries ward and he is a very scientific person and for them he is a robot. He is a perfect Alfas in every point of view.

HELMHOLZ WATSON:

He is an Alfas and he is very intelligent he has to invent some slogans for conditioning people so his grate intelligence and his love for poetry in the society of the NW are oppressed. He has a great feeling whit the Savage and he is fascinated to the Savage’s speaking. For them he goes in the island of freedom whit his friend Bernard.
