In
the society of Brave
New World, the scientific progress is very important, it is one of
principal instruments for giving
“COMMUNITY,IDENTITY,STABILITY” to the society
This
world is based on the scientific and technical organisation of the
whole society. Everyone has a solid scientific education, is
conditioned “to think” everything according to a
rational method, without any emotions, leaving out passions
and feelings.
But
the members of this community do not think, because when they were
embryos, they were
conditioned by means of a scientific and high technical method and
later “create” them. About
the world that
Huxley describes, we can say principally that the scientific
progress is fundamental, science and technology are the base of
all things and people can never live without them.
We also live,
principally, in a scientific and technological world, where
science and technology have a
very important role in our life.
The
world that Huxley imagined isn’t far from to the real world of
today and, probably, he were surprise
for our scientific world and we are developed.
In
the 20th century, we invented and discovered a lot of things. We
created many machines for our personal use and we have reached
a good economic condition; we discovered and are still
discovering a lot of information in medicine, we know all the
human genome. We are in the middle of the third scientific
revolution, we use many words as “Clone”, “O.G.M.”,
”Human genome”,
“Stem cells”, words of which we do not know the true meaning
but that we commonly use in the everyday life, and all these words
are “specific technical words” in science.
We
developed in a very short time and in all field of science and
this is very useful for our life. We can live much better that 100
years ago, everything is much “easier” than before.
This
is wonderful but the scientific advantages must be used with care
because they can become disastrous.
For
example, the scientists can clone
some parts of the human being . This can be extremely
useful because every man, in case he needs a transplant he will be
able to have a “spare” organ genetically similar to the
original, without any risk of rejection.
But,
let’s make the hypothis that the geneticists are able to clone a
complete human being , select and put the genes in the clone that
they want to produce, so creating a perfect man.
What
and who must the scientists select? Is it fair that only one group
of men can decide what the future individuals of the society will
be like? To answer to this questions is impossible.
A
lot of persons think that the scientific progress needs a stop
because the progress can be dangerous for humanity, as it is often
going against nature and for this reason it will lead the men to
ruin. Edward Goldsmith (Philosopher)
says: “The
progress is the negation of the evolution. The evolution can be
identified with the “way” that is used to stand by the
stability of the ecosphere and the progress can be identified with
the “anti-way” that is used to disturb the order of the
ecosphere and to reduce its stability”.
Then
other people think that the progress is essential for the society
because it is indispensable for the evolution of the humanity, it
is natural and necessary in the
human condition, and is a something that is inside every man. They
do not think at all that the scientific progress can destroy
nature. About this assumption Heidelberg(Scientist)
says: “The humanity has always developed by bridling
nature, imposing their own needs on it , not vice versa…. The
worst illnesses that harass our earth are ignorance and oppression,
and not science and technology, whose instruments are
indispensable for the future shape of the humanity, because they
can resolve problems such as the overpopulation, the hunger and
the illnesses”.
I
think that science do not produce “miracles” but isn’t the
cause of the catastrophes. Science is fundamental in our life,
in fact one of the biggest physiccists
of ever, Einstein, affirms: “One thing I have learned in the
course of my long life: that all our science, if
compared to reality, is primitive and childish, and yet is
the most precious good that we have”.
For
me, science must be used in the “fair dose” and we do not have
to exceed with it, because science is very important for our
society and for the development of the mankind. I think that
we are not going against nature and
we should stop the progress when this destroys or creates
some problems to nature.
For
concluding I say that the scientific freedom
can’t be absolute, because the scientific and
technological research is dependent on limitation of moral orders.
