Chapter
13 and 14

Settings: in front of the big gate of Willy
Wonka’s Factory, in the Factory.
Characters: Grandpa Joe, Charlie, Veruca and her mother, Violet and her father, August and his mother, Mike and his father, Mr. Willy Wonka and the
crowd.
Summary: the 13the chapter speaks about the day when the five children, together with
their escorts, meet in front of the gate of Willy Wonka’s big chocolate factory.
In this place everyone is waiting out until the gate opens, and finally
they go into the factory. While they are waiting, grandpa Joe stands out from the group because
he is very tall and thin. Meanwhile we can realize the difference between
Charlie and the other four children, that are much happier and lively, while
the poor boy is very very very thin and hungry and....sad. After a short time the
big gate opens and of a very enigmatic figure gets a glimpse on
them.
The 14th chapter describes the leader of the factory: Mr. Willy
Wonka. The book describes Mr Willy Wonka in this way: “Mr Wonka was standing all alone just inside the open gates of the factory. And what an extraordinary little man he
was!
He had a black top hat on his head.
He wore a tail coat made of a beautiful plum-coloured velvet.
His trousers were bottle green.
His gloves were pearly grey.
And in one hand he carry a fine gold-topped walking cane.
Covering his chin, there was a small, neat, pointed black beard — a
goatee.
And his eyes — his eyes were most marvellously bright. They seemed to be
sparkling and twinkling at you all the time. The whole face, in
fact, was alight.”
When they go into the factory, Mr. Wonka tells them to drop the coats on the
floor. After that they pass a long corridor that at the beginning is big and high but at the end it becomes little and
narrow. Here there is a little door, one metre high. Here they pass into another corridor up to a big wooden
door. On the door, in big letters, they read: “THE CHOCOLATE ROOM”.
Personal comments:
between these two chapters I like very much the 14th because this is the first time, after a long period, that some persons go into the factory of Willy Wonka.
I like the description of Willy Wonka that is very detailed and interesting and, from the description, I have imagined Willy Wonka as a funny and pleasing man.
Relevant quotation: “THE CHOCOLATE ROOM”. I have chosen it because I think that is the chapter key
point.
