The Magic Pearl

Chapter 1

I left my home to travel the world. Something I had wanted to do ever since I was the young age of six. Now a young man of twenty one without a care in the world, I boarded the ship with excitement impatient for the many adventures awaiting me.

I had never in my life experienced such a storm. A ship so large was tossed about in the sea like it was weightless. There were waves as high as tall buildings. I was terrified. The next thing I knew the ship had crashed into some huge rocks and I was drowning.
Down…down…down…I went into the dark sea. I knew the end was near. Just as I was gasping for what I thought was my last breath, I felt gentle hands lift me.

Chapter 2 B

I woke up when I felt the gentle hands. It was dark, and fear overcame me. It was then I realised that the gentle hands belonged to a fisherman. Helping me up, he told me that he had found me lying face down on the sea shore. With a smile, he handed me a bottle. Water never tasted so sweet as I gulped it down thirstily. After regaining some strength from wolfing down the grilled meat that he handed to me, it hit me in the back of my mind that I had no idea where I was. “Where am I?” I asked him. “Well, you are in Africa, my young boy. Mind I ask, how did you end up here all alone?” he replied.

Explaining to him about my desire to travel around the world, I confessed of my fear of returning to South America. He smiled, with a kind tinkle in his eye, reached into the little leather pouch that was tied securely to his belt. Pulling out the shiniest, roundest, whitest pearl I have ever seen, he told me that he was giving it to me. I was dumbfounded! “But....but..” I stammered “it must be worth a lot! You can’t give it to me!” I said in disbelief. “I am giving it to you so that you can return home. You see, this is a magic pearl. Just make a wish, and it will be granted.
