The
Return
Chapter 1
In 1965, I was
twenty-three years old and I was studying to become a
high school language and literature teacher. An early
September spring was in the air and very, very early one
morning, I was studying in my room. My house was the
only apartment building in that block and we lived on
the sixth floor.
I was feeling sort of lazy and every now and then, I’d
let my gaze wander out the window. From there I had a
good view of the manicured garden of the Old Don Cesareo
whose house occupied the corner lot. As it was cut off
diagonally at the corner, the land was the shape of an
irregular pentagon.
Next to this house stood the beautiful house of the
Bernascom family, lovely people who were nice to
everyone. They had three daughters and I was in love
with one of them, Adrianna. Every once in a while I
would cast a glance towards the sidewalk across the way,
more out of a habit of the heart.
This morning, the street was deserted so my attention
was unavoidably drawn to a man who appeared out of
nowhere.

Up
Chapter 2

He was standing next
to Don Cesareo's front door, staring at his garden. He
was short and quite fat, with moustache and thick
eyebrows, his hair was white, yet he looked like a
middle-aged man.
Suddenly someone knocked on my door, yowling.
I startled but I went to open the door.
“Oh, you! Stupid cat!”
Then I turned back to the window; the man wasn't there
any more.
The cat got more and more tiresome, so I went downstairs
to feed him. My sister's cat was the most annoying pet
in the whole earth. I do really regret having accepted
to keep it with me for a while.
When he finally calmed down, I decided to have a short
walk in the garden for an airing: I saw that odd man
again, now wondering around and occasionally gazing at
my home or at my neighbour's one. I went back into the
house, but I was really curious.

Should I follow him? Or
I'd better stay and wait?
