Grandfather's inheritance
Chapter 1
It was a completely common Friday
morning except that it was the 13th of January. It was
dark outside in spite that it was morning. The wind were
shaking the trees and the hail was pouring down. I sat
eating my breakfast when it knocked on my door.
I went quietly towards the door. Outside was a young
tall man in his twenties together with a little
darkhaired girl about 7 years old. They asked for the
road to the graveyard where they would put flowers on
their grandfather's grave.
They were newcomers in the town as they had inherited
their grandfather's house. They were by foot so the most
easy way would be through the the wood. I had time
enough before I had to leave for work so I fetched my
coat. Then I could show them the way. The track from my
house and towards the wood was not long so it wouldn't
take long time.
As I stood in the hall to put on my coat the front door
closed by itself. I could no longer see the young man
and the little girl. I tried to open the door but it was
locked. I went towards the back door and around the
house to find the young man and the little girl. They
were gone. I went by the track towards the wood to see
if they went that way. I couldn't find them.......

Chapter 2
As I was about to give up the search and head back to my
house, I saw a glimpse of what looked like the girl.
Curious, I proceeded towards the girl. When I blinked, I
was startled to find that she was gone. I scratched my
head, wondering what kind of person could disappear in
the blink of an eye.
I hadn’t noticed that I had strayed of the track and
begun to walk deeper into the woods. I didn’t recognize
my surroundings and realized that I was lost. As I
looked around and tried to find my way back, I heard
someone’s voice. It whispered in my ear. The voice
whispered my name, over and over again. It sounded like
the voice of the man I had met just over an hour ago. I
ran, trying to get away from the voice. I don’t know why
I ran, but I was just so scared. As I ran into the heart
of the woods, the atmosphere changed. It became dark and
damp, with moss growing all over the countless number of
trees, a huge change to the woods I was so familiar with
near my home.

Chapter 3
…. But it couldn’t be near my home at all. I had never
been in this parts of the woods. After all, I had run
for what seemed like an eternity without stopping to
look where I was. I slowed down and started walking, at
the same time I took in my surroundings and tried to
figure out where I was. The trees were standing awfully
close together. I couldn’t walk in between them but I
did keep on going. Suddenly I realised that, with every
step I took, the trees moved aside, one by one, to clear
a path.
After 10 minutes I reached a clearing. There was a house
there. It rose from the ground like a big castle. Close
to where I was standing there was a sign. It read: ‘come
no further unless you wish to suffer a most painful
death’. I got scared and I wanted to turn around and run.
Anywhere was better than here! But I couldn’t. My feet
wouldn’t go. I just couldn’t make them move. Instead, my
feet moved towards the house.
Now I saw the man and the girl whom I had met before.
They were standing in the doorway. They happily called
out to me to come closer. The girl said: “It is ok, we
won’t hurt you.” My fear subsided although the situation
was still suspicious. When I reached the door the man
and the girl started walking backwards, beckoning me
into the house. Something was not right in the way they
looked at me and at each other. The man looked angry and
was glaring at the girl. The girl then looked at me. She
looked evil. She said: “Hi. I am Samantha and this
– she
pointed to the man – is Thomas. You’re staying with us
for a while”. Then she sneered. The man leaped at me,
grabbed me and pulled me further into the house. The
door slammed with a loud bang and everything went dark.
Then something heavy fell or hit my head and the lights
went out….

Chapter 4
I woke up again, and I remember that, only for one
second, I wished I should not do that.
Around me a wonderful room, full of old furniture and
ancient pictures.
I was lying on a magnificent and comfortable bed, but
something wasn’t normal in that room.
The atmosphere, I think, or just the fact that
everything seemed timeless, not completely natural, sort
of fake. It looked like an antiques shop, and I have to
admit this made me feel better because I’ve always liked
that kind of shops.
All my happiness disappeared at once, when the door
squeaked, and a little head peeped out and sneaked into
the room.
“Do you want something to eat? You must be really hungry,
my dear. You have run a lot to arrive here…hi hi hi !!!”
That voice and her laugh scared me more than everything
I’ve ever been through before. And she was there,
waiting for my answer. I locked my eyes with hers, and a
shiver crossed my back.
She was nice and kind, but she had something mysterious,
and her eyes were filled with that.
I decided to answer, because she started to repeat it
over and over again: “Do you want something to eat?”,
“Nothing, thanks. I’m fine.”
And suddenly she answered, unaware of my refusal: “Ok.
I’ll bring you a lovely cup of tea.”
She went out, without locking the door.
I immediately understood. That was my opportunity. I
could escape and run away from that freighting timeless
house and from that scary girl.
I stood up in a while, I realized I was wearing a red
pyjamas but I didn’t care about it. I went to the door
and, when I was to put my hand on the handle and try to
open that, it opened by itself. The fear was
dramatically growing in me, I felt breathless and the
air around me seemed freezing. I don’t even know how I
started running along the corridor. The house was
enormous, and looked like a maze, I couldn’t find the
exit. I think I ran for more than one hour before I
found the front door. The fear became pure adrenaline in
my brain , and when I touched the ground outside I felt
safe.
But in that very moment a male voice started to shout
and a strength I didn’t know I could have came out.
Although I was exhausted, terribly frightened and I
didn’t feel my legs anymore, I ran, and ran, and ran
across the wood till I saw something familiar: the
graveyard. I was safe!
I walked out of it and I searched for help. I was so
tired that I collapsed on the ground. A few people
surrounded me and they were all laughing. Like a flash
in my mind I remembered the male voice shouting, I
remembered what it said “ TO THE GRAVEYARD!!!!!”. And they all were repeating the same words, all together,
with deep voices like an evil choir: “ TO THE GRAVEYARD!!!!!”
In a few seconds they hit me again and, after a while, I
woke up again in the strange horrible room I was before,
wearing a lovely pink dress. I looked like a doll. I was
a doll, and I’m still like that.
When the man and the little darkhaired girl had talked
of their grandfather’s inheritance, they hadn’t told me
that it wasn’t only the house, now I know the
inheritance included a nice guest as well: me. I am part
of their inheritance. A living doll for the little
darkhaired girl.
